Prof. Dr. Sir Geoffrey Allen Kt Dr.h.c mult PhD FIC FRS FRSC FInstP FIM FEng FPRI Hon. FCGI Hon. FUMIST
Dr. Allen is Executive Adviser at Kobe Steel, Non-Executive Director of Courtaulds, Chancellor of the University of East Anglia, President of the Royal Institute(PRI), Member National Consumer Council, Visiting Fellow Robinson College Cambridge and Member of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution. He was Postdoctoral Fellow at the National Research Council of Canada between 1952 and 1954 and became lecturer at the University of Manchester, UK, in 1955 until 1965. Sir Geoffrey was made Professor of Chemical Physics in 1965 and was in that appointment for 10 years until taking up the post of Professor of Polymer Science at Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London and then in 1976 until 1981 that of Professor of Chemical Technology. From 1977 till 1981 he was Chairman of the Science Research Council and in 1981 became Head of Research at Unilever PLC(UK's third largest Company). In 1982 Sir Geoffrey was made Director of Unilever responsible for Research and Engineering until 1990. He was Vice-President of the Royal Society from 1991 to 1993. Sir Geoffrey has been awarded the highest honours from many leading British scientific and technological universities. He could in many ways be considered as a modern day polymath like Newton was in his day; there are very few who have attained the pre-eminent heights of office in both the scientific and business worlds as Sir Geoffrey. He is therefore considered to be an exceptional creative and wise member of the WIF and we are grateful that he has given his time and help in the early growing years of the Institution.
Prof. Dr. Sir Philip John Randle Kt MA PhD MD FRCP FRS FUCL
Dr. Randle is Emeritus Professor and Emeritus Fellow at Hertford College, University of Oxford, UK. He was house physician and house surgeon at University College Hospital in 1951 and became MRC Research worker in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge, UK, in 1952 until 1955. Thereafter Sir Philip was Research Fellow at Sidney Sussex College between 1954 and 1957. He became Lecturer in Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge from 1955 to 1964 and Fellow and Director of Medical Studies between 1957 and 1964. From 1964 to 1975 Sir Philip was Professor and Head of the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Bristol until he moved to the University of Oxford, UK as Professor of Clinical Biochemistry and stayed in this appointment for 18 years. Sir Philip is an Honorary Fellow of Trinity Hall and has many distinguished awards including the Minkowski Prize and Ciba Medal. He was Member of the Board of Governors, United Cambridge Hospitals from 1960 till 1964 and Member of the Clinical Endocrinology Committee, MRC from 1957 until 1964. From 1967 to 1975 Sir Philip was a Member of the General Medical Council and from 1971-75 he was Member of the General Dental Council. From 1975 to 1977 Sir Philip was Chairman of the MRC Grants Committee and President of the European Association for Study of Diabetes between 1977-80. He was Chairman of the Research Committee of the British Diabetics Association from 1971-78 and Chairman of the British Heart Foundation from 1987 till 1992. Sir Philip was DHSS Member of the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy for 8 years from 1981, Member of Council of the Royal Society over the same period and Chairman of the COMA Panel on Diet and Cardiovascular Disease between 1981 and 1984. He was Consultant Adviser in Biochemistry to the Chief Medical Officer from 1981-89 and Vice-President of the Royal Society from 1988-89. Sir Philip's Lectures and further awards include, Banting, British Diabetic Association; Minkowski, European Association for the Study of Diabetes; Copp, La Jolla; Humphry Davy Rolleston, RCP; Ciba Lecture, Biochemical Society and Kroc, San Diego. In one life-time there can be few others who have been , and are still involved, with more research appointments in Science and technology than Sir Philip. He is unique and unusual in many ways as like the Institution's Chief Executive, he likes to Brick-lay as a recreational activity. Again, like with all the Institution members, we are honoured by his presence.
Reverend William Martin Smyth BA BD
Reverend Smyth is British Member of Parliament for Belfast South, Northern Ireland. He attended Magee University College, Londonderry, Trinity College, Dublin, and Assembly's College, Belfast. Reverend Smyth was Assistant Minister at Lowe Memorial, Finaghy from 1953 till 1957, then Minister Raffrey Presbyterian Church, Crossgar between 1957 to 1963 when thereafter he moved to the Alexandra Presbyterian Church, Belfast until 1982. He was Member of the Northern Ireland Convention in 1975 and was Member for Ulster Unionists, Belfast South, Northern Ireland Assembly from 1982-86 being Chairman of the Health and Social Services Committee during 1983-84 and Chairman Finance Committee between 1984-86. Previously Reverend Smyth was Chairman of the Ulster Unionists Executive from 1974-76 and Vice President from 1974 to this very day. He was Ulster Unionist Council Member: Select Committee for Social Services from 1983 till 1990 and Member Select Committee on Health from 1990. Reverend Smyth has been Vice-Chairman Parliamentary Committee for Soviet Jewry since 1983 and was Member of Executive, UK Branch of IPU from 1985 to 1992. He was made a Member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in 1986 and previously in 1972 Governor, Belfast City Mission, Grand Master, Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland. From 1974 till 1982 Reverend Smyth was Grand Master of World Orange Council and President between 1985 and 1988. He is a Hon. Past Grand Master, Canada and Hon. Deputy Grand Master, USA, New Zealand, New South Wales, Australia, of Orange Order. Reverend Smyth is a strong believer in the will of God and this overall belief has made possible the epochal change that has`swept through the Northern Ireland conflict and hopefully at last found the path to continuous peace. We all pray that this is the case within the Institution as a peaceful IRELAND is one of mankind’s steps to the possibility of a peaceful world in time. The United States has played a leading role in this process for peace, and an example that co-operation and working together succeeds.
The Rt. Hon. George Patrick John Rushworth Jellicoe, The Earl Jellicoe, Viscount Brocas of Southampton KBE PC DSO MC FRS
Earl Jellicoe is the President of the Royal Geographical Society UK and the British Heart Foundation, Chancellor of the University of Southampton and Chairman of European Capital. He is the only son of Admiral of the Fleet the 1st Earl Jellicoe and was the Hon. Page to the late King George V at his wedding The Earl Jellicoe was educated at Winchester and Trinity College, Cambridge University, UK. He served in WW2 on active service firstly joining the forces in the Coldstream Guards and then 1 SAS and the SBS Regiment. The Earl Jellicoe was mentioned in Despatches on no less than three separate times and was awarded the Military Cross(M.C.) and the Companion of the Distinguished Service Order(D.S.O.) for Gallantry above and beyond the call of Duty. He has also been honoured with the Legion d’Honneur, Croix de Guerre, Grand Commander Order of Honour Greece and Greek War Cross. Earl Jellicoe after the War entered into politics and diplomatic services and held succeeding appointments as 1st Secretary in Washington, Brussels and Baghdad where he was also Deputy Secretary-General, Lord-in-Waiting, Joint Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, Minister of State at the Home Office, First Lord of the Admiralty, Minister of Defence for the Royal Navy, Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the House of Lords, Lord Privy Seal and Minister in Charge at the Civil Service Department and Leader of the House of Lords. He has been Chairman of the British Advisory Committee on Oil Pollution at Sea, the Medical Research Council(MRC), Tate & Lyle PLC, Davy Corporation, Booker Tate, Kings College London, the Eastern European Trade Council, the Anglo-Hellenic League and the British Overseas Trade Board. Earl Jellicoe has also held the position of Director at Sotheby's, Smith Industries PLC, Morgan Crucible PLC and S G Warburg and President of the National Federation of Housing Societies and the Parliamentary and Science Committee. Between 1967-70 he was a Governor of the Centre for Environmental Studies. Earl Jellicoe is a man of great courage, dignity and vision and the Institution is proud to have him as a Member.
Prof. Dr. Michael Sela PhD Dr. h.c.
Dr. Sela is Deputy Chairman of the Weizmann Institute of Science and the World Health Organisation(WHO) Expert Adviser on Immunology. He joined the Weizmann Institute in 1950 as their Head of Department of Chemical Immunology becoming both Member of the Board of Governors and Vice-President in 1970. From 1970-73 Professor Sela was Dean of the Faculty of Biology and made President from 1975-85. He has had and still has an illustrious life in science and medicine being W.Garfield Weston Professor of Immunology(1966), Visiting Scientist US National Institute of Health(1956-57), Visiting Professor of Molecular Biology at UC Berkeley(1967-68), Visiting Professor Department of Medicine Tufts University(1986-87), Fogarty Scholar-in-Residence(1973-74), Member of WHO Expert Advisory Panel of Immunology(1962-present day), Chairman of Council of the European Molecular Biology Organisation(1975-79) and Founding Member Board of Directors of the International Foundation for Survival and Development of Humanity(1988-92). Professor Sela’s unique achievements cover nearly a half page in the International Who’s Who publication and readers are respectfully directed to that publication. The above is therefore only an overview of this great man of Science, Medicine and Technology. He is a man of immense vision for the future of mankind and is one of the WIF’s greatest assets for its evolving global work.
The Most Honourable The Marquess of Bath, Alexander George Thynn Bt BA MA
Alexander Thynn is the 7th Marquess of Bath and was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. He was a Lieutenant in the Life Guards from 1951-52 and in the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry between 1953-57. The Marquess contested Westbury(1974) and Wells((1979) and the European Elections(1979). He was President of the Verulam Institute from 1976-86 and has opened up his stately home for the public benefit. The Marquess has published several imaginative books on both Art and Politics and his immensely creative talent is his greatest asset. Therefore the Institution considers the Marquess to be an invaluable source of reference for creativity and for his common-touch judgement. If ever there were a bonding between one of the members of England’s highest aristocracy and the people, it has to be the noble Lord Bath. We are grateful that he has joined in the Institution’s work to make for for a better world for all.
